Finally had time to see Iron Man 3! Great movie, Joss’ humour really shines through again, and I loved it. When all the suits showed up I leaned over to my wife and said “Nerdgasm!” because I did… Just wish there was a little more “co-op” with some Ironman/Warmachine. Other then that (which is hardly anything) twas ermerzing!

I don’t know about anyone else, but big industry in gaming these days just seems to be lacking, or purposely trying to piss off customers. Between WiiU just… ya… and the PS4 “streaming” PS1,2 and 3 titles but not letting you use a disc? I just don’t have the faith I used to when getting ready for the next big thing. My parents got me the NES way back in the day and I remember trading it in (stupid idea, but seemed good at the time) along with all my games to get the SNES when that came out. I remember the excitement in waiting for the N64 to come out. The PSX was the same, and as much as I love Nintendo, and would even still consider myself a Faithful or Fanboy, the PS2 has got to be one of the best consoles to have ever been developed. It played all your old PSX (well for the most part) games and had one of the biggest and bestest libraries. My wife and I bought the 60gig PS3 the week that came out and loved having a system to play pretty much any PlayStation game with it’s backwards compatibility. There does seem to be some stirrings of potential awesome in the works. I’ve mentioned OUYA before. But I’m also keeping my eye on the Xi3 Piston Steam Box, Nvidia’s Project Shield, and very sweets GameStick The Steam Box would be awesome to have for the days I just want to kick back on my couch and play a PC game! Project Shield looks like portable awesomeness with a full on controller. And the GameStick is basically what I have already said! As gamers we need these project to succeed! If for no other reason then to tell the big companies that we won’t stand by while you try and sell us on the hopes of pre-orders, on-disc DLC, or always on DRM.

My wife and I picked up a copy of the Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set from ThinkGeek.com. Mainly since we don’t have a copy anymore and we’ve been secretly plotting to force our two kids to play! Well… when they get a little older as our oldest is 2 years old, and our youngest is just 2 months old. Deciding to play again brought back a lot of memories, and just the setup or talking of setup has been great. Is it sad that I’m looking forward to planning my own kids Character Sheets? lol (>^_^)>

Just 7 days left to donate to charity, and if you haven’t seen the deal you can get for at least a dollar then head on over to Humble Bundle. You can choose the amount you want to donate for up to 7 games and 5 game soundtracks! All these are redeemable through Steam, and if you donate you will be helping out Child’s Play Charity and American Red Cross. The games include… Darksiders Metro 2033 Red Faction: Armageddon Company of Heroes Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor Also as a bonus, if you pay more then the average donation ($5.59 currently)… Saints Row: The Third This is looking like a good deal! Even if all these games were discounted in Steam down to $5, you would still be paying $35. Heck pay the full price for any of them when they were new and it would still be a steal. Never mind the fact you also get… Saints Row: The Third – The Soundtrack Darksiders Original Soundtrack – Directors Cut Red Faction: Armageddon Original Soundtrack Company of Heroes: All Heroes Rise Company of Heroes: Songs From the Front When you visit humblebundle.com you can use the sliders in the payment section to choose who gets your cash, THQ, Charity or Humble themselves. Again, if you donate you’ll be helping out Child’s Play Charity and American Red Cross.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it again. My wife and I, along with my brother, had been playing Final Fantasy XI since Xmas 2003. We finally deactivated our accounts back in March of this year, making it just over 8 years played. FFXI drifted from one of our favourite games over the last few years after they introduced Abyssea. We remember the excitement we had when starting out on our first day. The awe and wonder and when we we’re sucked into the opening story. That feeling we had when we took our first step outside of Windurst. Years later our love of the story and lore has never faded, but the gameplay has suffered (in our opinions). Along comes 2005 and Squeenix unveils Rapture. Everyone wondered what they were thinking and what would come next. Fast forward a few years and they reveal that Rapture is really, Final Fantasy XIV. Everyone is… well not shocked really, this is Square, but what the hey. The point is, we were excited about a new MMO again. Also since co-op is mostly all I care about, this was the first time in a while I was excited about a game I could play along side my brother and wife simultaneously (or other friends if they could/would play dammit). Moving forward once more and I pick up my copy of FFXIV on the North American release date. A month or so later it goes “free-to-play” and rightfully so. It was basically maybe BETA quality, leaving a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths. Like soap… and poo… I still played for a while, joined shortly after with my brother. I built a new rig in early 2011, which helped a lot but the gameplay was still clunky and slow. We were in the midst of the game being totally redone, every patch saw improvements and additions. Tweaks left, right and centre. Then Squeenix released this video a couple of weeks ago… Dear sweets-ness-ing gawds. Say what you will about the game and/or the company, they sure know how to make a cinematic cut-scene. This video single-handedly renewed my interest in FFXIV. We are now waiting patiently to see if at least one of the three of us can get into the Alpha Test which I believe started on November 28th! No luck with the first round of invites sent out on the 26th but Monday December 3rd is the next wave! Our spirits are high, our patients tempered with how long it’s been already (and how long we’re waited for other games). Anticipation is through the blooming roof!

Retro-Rant: Is it me or does the industry seem so fascinated with what they can do that they forget to do what they should do? Maybe it’s just my old gaming mentality, maybe it’s just me being old in general. Does it not seem as though the big-wigs sit around their fat offices in their fat suits saying “Ermergerd! We just doubled the polygon count for our latest game engine! Quick remake {such-and-such} and ship it without any QA and we’ll just patch it when we need to…”. I love technological progress just as much as the next geek, but don’t drop storyline for a few extra pixels! Don’t throw Quality Assurance and Testing out the window to push your product out a few days earlier. Don’t tack-on multiplayer “Deathmatch” and “Team Deathmatch” to appease what you think your audience wants. Don’t crunch out sequels for the sake of having sequels. BAH! I really needed to get that off my chest… I feel a bit better now, that will probably come back again though.
I don’t know about you, but if you haven’t heard of the Android based OUYA console coming out next year, then I don’t really want to know where you’ve been! This little magic machine is stirring up quite a bit of controversy, anticipation and excitement. It’s main purpose, from what I understand, is to bring back the love of gaming to the TV. Brilliant! Superb! But we’re just getting started, it’s only $99! Throw in a modest $10 shipping fee, and you get the Console itself and one controller. Holy crap! The people getting this project going say they want all games to be free in some form or another. For example; you might want to try out a game before you buy it, what do you do? Get the demo! Or maybe it will be a free to download game, with micro transactions. Just to name a few options. How could it get any better? Every OUYA will come with a Dev Kit, allowing anyone with game-making-ness knowledge to crack’er open and start making games! That alone is my favourite reason for this system. This “Power to the Masses” design, in my humblely-hoping opinion, is the reason I believe the OUYA will shake the very foundation of our Gaming Industry as we know it today. Imagine a big company *coughs* ea *coughs* is milking one of it’s most prize possessions *coughs* masseffect *coughs*. Everyone loves these games, their story starts out rich, the characters are compelling and well rounded. There’s a trilogy on the horizon and we’re all waiting patiently to see how it all comes to an end (or endings). Then BAM! An industry giant comes along and cuts our hearts out. We finish it anyways, then we cry… we cry… I say Fudge them! Take OUYA and make our own stories! Show them how it’s done! Show them they can end a story and still make money! And when they come crawling back to us, their customers, we kick them again, then offer our hand to help them back up and Bowser toss them off the nearest cliff to oblivion! *Sigh* Sorry got on a rant there. Gawd that felt good. In summary, I vote OUYA for the future of all gaming industry models, and fun, and sleekness… Power to the People!

I’m a huge fan of sitting down and playing in front of my TV, I’ve always owned a console, but I cannot deny having a couple games on my phone (especially these days) makes me happy! Whether I’m going on a long road trip, or just a little walk, or, dare I say, to work! I take gaming with me. That being said, I don’t think gaming-on-the-go will ever take the main spot light. (Well, unless we can get a full VR experience from the phones of the future!) The couch and TV will always be the ultimate in good ol’ fashion kick-back and relax gaming. Which still leaves the puter for the more hardcore gamers. So in short: Portable Games = Games everyone can enjoy Console Games = A nice mid-way for hardcore and normies alike Computers = Great place for Hardcore gamers P.S.: But lets face it a puter can do it all!
